Classroom Design

Our classroom was designed with considerable thought based on the needs of our children. A substantial amount of space was given so children have the opportunity to move freely around the room.  Similarly, a comforting library was designed in the additional room attached to our classroom for children who might need some individual time or a quiet space to work or relax.   Another quiet independent work space was placed at the back of the classroom as a second option for students.  We also considered the importance of natural light, and decided to have a room with large windows and blinds.  Our classroom also includes adaptive technology for academic growth and motivation.   The Ministry of Education (2006) states, “Information and communications technologies (ICT) provide a range of tools that can significantly extend and enrich teachers’ instructional strategies and support students’ learning in language” (p. 30). We supply various technology tools for students to meet their learning needs: laptops, iPads, and a Smartboard.  Overall, the classroom layout supports choice and flexibility to foster cognitive, emotional, and academic growth.
