Day Schedule

(a brief overview of our week)

Monday

Morning Routine:

  • Morning game: Add On!

  • Comic strip: use the echo reading strategy to focus on expression and fluency

Writing:

  • Letter to Robert Munsch:  Introduce Students to Letter Activity and Model Four Square Drafting for Letter Ideas

Vocabulary:

  • Word Detectives: use the Frayer Model to focus on vocabulary, knowledge building, and oral language

  • Talk a Mile a Minute Game: describe words from the word wall to develop vocabulary and motivation

Social Studies:

  • Our students integrate with a Grade 5/6

  • Grade 5: The Role of Government and Responsible Citizenship

  • Grade 6: Canada’s Interactions with the Global Community

Math+Fiction Book:

  • We will read a new page of our “Fact/How?” book while the afternoon attendance is taken down. An example of a question might be, “why do balloons float”. We will take predictions from students, read the page, and answer any questions students have.

  • Geometry: Symmetry - Picture Book to introduce symmetry and dance activity: “Seeing Symmetry ”

Health and Physical Education: 

  • Our students integrate with a Grade 5/6

Hangout Time:

  • Students play literacy games they co-created with a partner or teacher

Wrap Up:

  • Some of our students leave for French
  • Writing activity: write and draw short stories in a group to practice writing skills 

  • Reflection and agendas

 

Wednesday

Morning Routine:

  • Morning game: World Wall Hunt

  • Song lyrics: use the choral reading strategy to focus on fluency and sight word recognition

Guided Reading and Centres:

  • Red Group: Reading with teachers (reading strategies focus) and Writing in role (comprehension focus)

  • Green Group: Writing activity using Bit Strips (comprehension focus) and Independent reading when finished

  • Blue Group: Independently reading the assigned pages and Reading with teachers (comprehension focus)

Story: 

  • Read-a-Loud "The Story of Chocolate" & Discussion

Music

Math+Fiction Book:

  • We will read another page from the “Fact/How?” book. An example of a question might be, “why do we hear the ocean inside of shells?”

  • Geometry: Symmetry - Explore with  activities and introduce dance activity

Writing: Letter to Robert Munsch:  Students continue to draft letters to Munsch.  First round of reviews begin.

Wrap Up:

  • Some of our students leave for French

  • Meditation: parent volunteer coming in to do yoga to focus on positive mental health

  • Reflection and agendas

Tuesday

Morning Routine:

  • Morning game: Antonym and Synonym Around the World

  • Newspaper article: use think-writes and think-alouds to focus on reading comprehension strategies

Guided Reading and Centres:

  • Red Group: Reading with teachers (reading strategies focus) and Individual comic strips explaining what they read (comprehension)

  • Green Group: Independently reading the assigned pages and Reading with teachers (fluency and comprehension focus)

  • Blue Group: Writing activity about last week’s chunk using four-square method (comprehension focus) and Independent reading when finished

Story:

  • Read-a-Loud "The Story of Chocolate" & Discussion

Social Studies: 

  • Our students integrate with a Grade 5/6

  • Grade 5: The Role of Government and Responsible Citizenship

  • Grade 6: Canada’s Interactions with the Global Community

Math+Fiction Book:

  • We will read another page from the “Fact/How?” book. An example of a question might be, “how does our hair grow?”

  • Geometry: Symmetry - Exploe with math games and activities

Writing: 

  • Letter to Robert Munsch:  Review and Model Letter writing and structures. Students begin first draft of letter to Munsch

Hangout Time:

  • Students play math games they co-created with a partner or teacher

Wrap Up:

  • Some of our students leave for French

  • Read to a partner to develop expression and fluency 

  • Reflection and agendas

Thursday

Morning Routine:

  • Morning game: Rhyme Around the World

  • Poem: read a poem and develop a poem in pairs to focus on phonemic awareness and motivation

Guided Reading and Centres:

  • Red Group: Reading with teachers (reading strategies focus) and Free choice comprehension activity

  • Green Group: Independently reading the assigned pages and Reading with teachers (fluency and comprehension focus)

  • Blue Group: Letter writing activity (comprehension focus) and Independent reading when finished

Story/Drama/Dance:  

  • Read-a-Loud "The Story of Chocolate" & Discussion

Social Studies: 

  • Our students integrate with a Grade 5/6

  • Grade 5: The Role of Government and Responsible Citizenship

  • Grade 6: Canada’s Interactions with the Global Community

Writing: 

  • Letter to Robert Munsch:  Students continue to draft, review and edit letters to Munsch.  Some students begin final draft of letters.

Hangout Time:

  • Students play any educational game they co-created with a partner or teacher

Arts: Drama: 

  • Grade 5/6 students have reverse integration with our class.  

  • This week we have the "The Trial of The Wolf"

Wrap Up:

  • Some of our students leave for French

  • Vocabulary activity: reverse Frayer Model to guess the centre word to focus on vocabulary

  • Reflection and agendas

Friday

Morning Routine:

  • Morning game: Word Beats

  • Scrambled Word Game: solve the word of scrambled letters, which focuses on spelling patterns

Guided Reading and Centres:

  • All 3 groups collaborate with their partners to present the beach ball activity for the class. The Red Group can choose to present the beach ball activity, another comprehension presentation they created, or individual comprehension presentations, while the Green and Blue Group share the beach ball activity

Readers Theatre:

  • Students sign out poems or passages on Monday, practice them in class and at home throughout the week, and present them in front of the class on Friday. The purpose is for students to practice and re-read easy (and sometimes challenging) texts in order to build fluency and expression. We will model and coach students throughout the week. This is also a great opportunity for students to build their confidence in reading.

Writing: 

  • Letter to Robert Munsch:  Students complete edits and final draft of  letters to Munsch.

Math+Fiction Book:

  • We will read another page from the "Fact/How?" book. An example of a question might be, "why do we get wrinkles?"

  • Geometry: Symmetry - Gemeotrical Dance Performance

Library and Silent Reading: 

  • The library and tech ambassadors from our class help the JK/SK class (who have library at the same time) use the library computers and find books

Catch Up:

  • This is a period for students to complete any work they have not finished. It is also an opportunity for us to have independent conversations with students.

Health and Physical Education: Our students integrate with a Grade 5/6
